The longer a spillage sits the more difficult the stain will be to treat. So in the event of a spillage / staining, endeavour to remove the excess spillage promptly by covering the affected area with multiple paper towels and absorbing surface residue. Repeat, blot and compress. Repeating this process will often absorb much of the stain and minimise its spread and severity. Do not rub or brush the carpet pile as pile distortion can occur. Use a blotting or dabbing motion.

In the case of a paint spill, scrape off as much as possible using a spatula or plastic half shovel to remove the bulk of contents on to waste paper.

Acrylic paint; dilute with water to keep spill area damp and place damp cloth over area until technician arrives with extraction equipment.

Enamel paint; use turps or thinners if available to dilute stain and restrict drying process until a specialist arrives.

Do not saturate the stain with water or solvents as this can create other problems for the treatment process, particularly jute stain transfer from carpet backing. Modern stain treatments work effectively even when spillage has dried.

Please resist the temptation to use household products, home recipes or layman’s advice on stains as the wrong approach can complicate professional attempts at treatment or in some cases even set the stain.

Advanced stain treatment has become a specialised field involving an understanding of the chemistry of stains and cleaning chemicals. Different techniques are often used for wool and synthetic carpets. Apart from general household spots and spills, stain treatment should be left to a qualified technician for the best results.
